CRES students bought tickets for a dollar a piece for a chance to win one of 3 prizes by guessing the correct number of candies in a jar. There were 927 pieces of candy and the first place winner was only three pieces shy of the correct guess! The event was sponsored by our Kid's Cabinet and raised $660 for the Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital...
WTG CRES kids!

For their economics unit, our 3rd grade students designed a product and pitched the idea to the "Shark Tank" (their teachers) in the hopes of winning over investors. The "Tank" then Invested in each group's business, and the manufacturing began!
Students devised advertising, signage and displays for their products and then put them up for sale on Market Day. Each participated in the role of consumer and producer by shopping in the market and selling their items. At the end of Market Day when products were scarce, some heated bargaining took place!
Such a fun day learning how to be a savvy consumer as well as a smart manufacturer.

What a fun way to start our week with a visit from West African drummer, Namory Keita, sponsored by The Maine Humanities Council. Namory was born in 1982 in the village of Sangbarala, Guinea. At age 7 he began drumming, becoming the lead drummer for his village in 2006. As an international teacher and performing artist, Namory has been invited to many places to share his culture...including York, Maine!

Steve Hamel has been volunteering in the York Schools for over 13 years! He began helping when his daughters became involved with theater in elementary school. His daughters have both now graduated and Steve continues to volunteer countless hours to York Schools Drama Program. Steve focuses his talents behind the scenes in our York Community Auditorium, providing the technical direction for all of the York High Drama and Middle School productions and also for the York Parks and Rec productions. Theater is a hobby that Steve loves and he also enjoys performing in seacoast area productions. He is passionate about the lighting, sound and projections he creates with the amazing equipment that the YCA offers. The York Schools Volunteer Program thanks Steve for the hundreds of hours given each year to support enrichment in the York Schools.
When we asked Steve why he does it and what he enjoys about it he said:
“The student actors & techs I work with put so much of themselves into each production….they are inspiring! Working with these young people over years and seeing them grow as performers brings me real joy. In return, I want to ensure they have a great experience and that the theater tech helps them put on a top notch performance. Also, the team of volunteers I get to work with are wonderful! There is so much that goes into a successful production and it couldn't be done without the other volunteers and the whole crew of parents that support live theater in York, I love working with them!”

John Meader brought his Star Lab to Coastal Ridge as part of our third grade ELA curriculum, exploration of outer space. Students removed their shoes and crawled into the inflated dome and watched in awe as the universe was revealed to them.

Our CRES Civil Rights Team members created an Equality Tree on display in the office. Our team worked hard to find quotes from famous leaders who supported equal rights for all, that expressed the importance of respect for people of all races, skin colors, abilities, genders, families and religions. CRES is a place where all are welcome!

Our SRO Dave McKinnon stopped by today to show us the newest member of the York Police Dept...MAJOR. Definitely the cutest guy on the force! Part of Major's job will be to help students develop social skills and lend emotional support.

We were fortunate to have author Mary Cerullo, author of 21 award-winning books for children, visit with all of our students yesterday. Mary describes herself as science interpreter. She's worked with many scientists and ocean advocates to help people understand the nature of scientific research and environmental issues.
To our 2nd graders, Mary described her experience sitting on the ocean floor in the Bahamas watching reef sharks feed. Our 3rd grade classes listened intently while Mary spoke of a scientist who recently discovered the secret to attracting 50 feet long Giant Squid in the freezing black depths of underwater canyons. 4th graders were treated to a slideshow of Iceland where locals swim in a volcanic crater.
Mary also took our students through the process of how she creates her books. Such a fun and informative day!

Winter is coming! We want to make sure students are able to get outdoor play and fresh air daily but they need to be dressed appropriately too. Thank you!

CRES 4th grade students were the stars of the Weather at Your School segment with Todd McInerney and his crew from #WMTW. A dedicated group of hearty Mainers braved the cold this morning starting at 5:45 AM for the live broadcast in front of Coastal Ridge. Later, Todd addressed the entire fourth grade group and explained his use of weather models to forecast upcoming storms, and entertained many questions from our inquisitive learners. If you missed the early morning broadcast, you can tune in again to WMTW at 6 o'clock tonight for another CRES segment.
Here's a sneak peek behind the scene of our students recording, "Maine's Total weather!"
